Klangwiese

LAPTOP ORCHESTRA
laptop_orchestra is an interactive synaesthetic instrument, designed for performances of audio visual compositions in real time.
The space conformation of the fifteen laptops, arranged on regular rows, brings back to the formation of an orchestral group.
On each one of them is installed a Software consisting in algorithms which activate sounds and abstract visual shapes based on color spectrum. Each laptop has its own sound and its own instructions for the construction of a shape.
Interacting from the orchestra conductor podium, lightly touching metal stems, it is possible to activate or deactivate each single laptop , permitting the generation of an endless number of different compositions.
Compared to a software of elementary audio and visual compositions, this installation puts the interaction in a defined and public space dimension, drawing a reactive environment in the contour of its physical dimension.

SUPER CILIA SKIN
Super Cilia Skin is a multi-modal interactive interface, conceived as a computationally enhanced membrane coupling tactile-kinesthetic input with tactile and visual output. An array of individual actuators (cilia) use changes in orientation to display images or physical gestures as physical or tactile information.
GORI NODE GARDEN
a physical & ambient data visualization as a network garden in which each plant grows up fed by personal communication data (phone call history). each plant vibrates to a unique phone number retrieved from assigned mobile devices during 'watering time', similar to how plants move when the breeze blows on them. a mobile phone number is a 'seed', identifying each plant. pushing data into the installation from the database is 'watering'. a plant 'grows' depending on the amount of communication length: the more it grows, the more the plants bends because of the material. 'wind' is represented as vibration of a plant: depending on 'duration', 'frequency', 'incoming', 'outgoing' or 'text message', GORI uses different movements, lights & subtle sounds. for instance, when it receives incoming data, it vibrates with blinking, while outgoing data makes it vibrate only without any light change.
INFOBREATH
The air we breath is infused with the wavelengths of wireless internet traffic, forming an information ecosystem of which we are only fleetingly aware. This project visualizes these hertzian emissions in the form of the carbon dioxide we exhale with every breath.
It imagines a world in which the carbon dioxide we exhale carries comprehensible information, and envisions the transfer of carbon dioxide to oxygen within a plant as a transfer of information: an information ecosystem.
TENORI-ON
Media artist Toshio Iwai and Yamaha have collaborated to develop a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century, TENORI-ON. A16x16 matrix of LED switches allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a "visible music" interface.
SENSACELL
The Sensacell system is a new human interface technology for various interior and exterior applications and is scalable from a single module to 1000’s of square feet. The modular sensor detects objects within 6″ through materials such as glass, plastics, wood, tile, etc. The system’s network can also interface with a computer for control over any module within the system.
INFOTROPISM - Living and Robotic Plants as Interactive Display
A living plant information display, representing the human habits of throwing things away in either trash or recycling containers. a normal trash can & recycle bin each is assigned a separate light, which will turn on when one of them is used, hereby steering the growth directions of the living plants towards the highest usage (to enhance the speed, a plant-like robotic version was developed as well). this ambient display explores how information can be shown fully intuitively, here by using living material & biomimetic forms.

MATRIX
The MATRIX (Multipurpose Array of Tactile Rods for Interactive eXpression) is a new musical instrument that gives users a 3-dimensional tactile interface to control sound with their hand(s). It can be used as either a stand alone instrument or in conjunction with a traditional musical keyboard or microphone. The MATRIX generates musical output by mapping a performer's expressive gestures to a variety of sonic parameters. It acts as an input device that directly manipulates the parameters of a synthesis engine (eg. additive, granular, wave-terrain...), or an effect alogrithm (eg. delay, reverb, filter-banks...) in response to the changing shape of the interactive surface. In this way, the MATRIX provides a very intuitive method of manipulating sound with an amount of control that has never before been implemented in real-time.
One mapping uses the individual rods of the MATRIX to directly control the digital waveform of a sound, thereby "sonically sculpting" the timbre of the sound. An example of this technique is shown below in the excerpt from one of my compositions titled Dactylonomy. It is a duet for MIDI keyboard and MATRIX, and utilizes a custom synthesis technique that is actually a cross between Wave-terrain and Scanned synthesis (see "New Musical Mappings for the MATRIX" for more information). The video below shows the last 1:30 of the piece, which premiered August 17th, 2002 at the Woodstockhausen Electronic Music Festival in Santa Cruz, California.
