description: Last month Roberto Verganti resumed the design state of affairs like this: We know how to improve things using technology, and everyone knows studying users will help design, but we don’t know how to improve meaning. Product design needs indeed to reset itself from its long filiation with mass-industry and consumerism. This course is about developing skills for thinking outside of the box and search for alternative references while designing new things. Work flow will not be based on a single semester-project but on a sequence of different exercises, which focus on practicing an "observe-understand-interpret" model, rather than the common "research-develop-produce." The lessons will consist of short assignments, which can go from conceptual to more practical exercises or quick research projects. These exercises will feed a continuous debate about the possible "purposes" for making new things. The aim is to encourage the use of design as a tool for questioning and understanding material culture, before responding to it with more products.
