Title: Photography: Brief History and Opportunities in the USA
Presenter: Gene Berryhill, PhD

Since the birth of photography in the mid 1800s, much progress has gone forth in this field and continues to impact the world in virtually every corner. There are very few if any occupations or interests that do not employ and implement the products and uses of photography. Besides professional interests, most households own at least one camera.

The twentieth century brought new visions of how the camera could be used and applied to a variety of fields. The German contribution through such schools as the Bauhaus was important for the blending of photography with design. Innovative ideas made their way to the USA and mutual expertise combined in a variety of outputs.

Today in the USA, photography continues to play a major role within a wide range of possibilities, and many opportunities exist for professional photographers. Some of these general divisions are, portrait, commercial, fine art, scientific, news and industrial.

Selected subdivisions are, legal, fashion, graphic design including magazines and books, historical/archaeology, aerial, nature/ecology, socio/political, wedding/event, advertising, corporate, architecture, journalism and travel. Many of these have blended into successful photographic careers. Examples are wedding and fashion or science and fine art. More recently digital technology has brought about major changes in photo image development and practice.
